The source of a good & longlasting life

”For beauty, wellness, and healthcare.” That was the motto when Hagabadet was founded in 1876. Over 145 years later, the purpose remains the same, albeit in the form of a modern health club that prioritizes quality of life and longevity.

Hagabadet’s history

It began one warm July day in 1834 when Anders Ryberg and his wife Anna Persdottern died of what turned out to be the very first cases of cholera in Sweden. The cholera epidemic struck several times over a number of decades and the people of Gothenburg were helpless to respond. Meanwhile an English doctor had discovered the link between good hygiene, clean water and cholera. With this discovery, awareness of proper sanitation grew and measures were slowly implemented all across Europe. In 1869 a fortune was donated to the city of Gothenburg. It came from Sven Renström, a businessman and politician who had been responsible for poverty relief work in Gothenburg. As part of providing Gothenburg with clean water and proper sanitation to eradicate cholera, the donation was the foundation of today’s Hagabadet. 7 years later, on 9 September 1876, the spa opened its doors for the first time.

The fire that changed the course of history

15 July 1903 was a calamitous day for Hagabadet. In the space of a few hours, two of the worst fires in Gothenburg’s history had broken out. And without the heroic efforts and unwavering commitment of the city’s people, our beautiful building would not be standing today. The spa sustained severe damage, with only the brick walls of the façade left intact. A decision was taken almost immediately by the city’s municipal executive. “Gothenburg shall build a new spa that will match the one in Stockholm for beauty.” Three years later the spa reopened and the people of Gothenburg could finally enjoy a majestic bathing facility of their own, just like the one in Stockholm.

Present day

When the baths reopened in 1997, a new era had dawned. The existing spa was supplemented with a wide range of activities: different kinds of therapy, beauty care, health care, medical care, fitness and a café – a truly modern spa. Generations of locals have enjoyed the restorative effects of the Hagabadet’s baths and the invigorating activities. The spirit of community and infinity of possibilities is etched into the very walls.
